Star Lighthouse Explorer
There is a sense of mystery that surrounds a lighthouse. Standing watch, these
lone sentinels protect mariners against an unforgiving Mother Nature. From coast
to coast lighthouses have become a reminder of an ancient past, a time when navigation
was dependent upon the stars in the sky and the strength of the wind against your
sails. But these historic structures continue to protect and guide the modern
day sailors as they battle unforgiving seas. Fly with us back to a bygone
era as we explore the unique lighthouses and sites of Southeast, Alaska. We'll
take you there in style aboard one of our executive class floatplanes, fully equipped
for your comfort and pleasure with whisper quiet headsets, plush seating, and
large bubble windows for a bird's eye view of the landscape below. Your seaplane
Captain will personally narrate your flight and will welcome questions about the
history, geography and wildlife that you'll encounter during your voyage.
On
this unique 90 minute flight we'll fly around and
above "Tree Point Lighthouse", poised to
warn mariners of treacherous 'Lord Rocks' below. We'll
continue on to "Mary Island Lighthouse".
Just 25 miles from the Canadian border, it was named
in 1872 for the daughter of Admiral John Winslow.
Next we'll search out the Lightship Umatilla LV 196
which served at Umatilla Reef from 1961 to 1971, when
it was decommissioned. It then mysteriously disappeared
for 29 years, finally being discovered in Ketchikan
in 2000. "Guard Island Lighthouse" is our
last destination. It was first illuminated in 1904
and is one of 4 wooden buildings resting on tiny Guard
Island today, still leading mariners to safety.
In
addition to these amazing structures we'll explore
the vast landscape of Southeast, Alaska. Marine and
land animals are abundant in this region of the world
and we'll often spot brown and black bear, killer
whales, and the majestic American Bald Eagle. This
once in a lifetime experience will delight lighthouse
and flight enthusiasts alike. Soar with Misty Fjords
Air above the clouds and re-visit a time when the
wind and stars guided your way and a glowing light
on the horizon was your pathway home.
